The Architectural Design specialization within the M.Arch. Program at the institute is advanced design stream intended for architects to explore, experiment and critically reimagine design as a discipline, empowered by the experience of practice. The specialization has a broader mandate compared to other M.Arch. Streams and allows students to explore the following themes – new tools and technologies of design, design for social change, reimagining the agency of architectural practitioners, among other things. Students also have opportunities to explore design theory, particularly in the realm of form and aesthetics, ways of making, computational design, history of design and contemporary practice.

specialization becomes an opportunity to reflect, discover new design processes or explore new trajectories outside of the exigencies of professional practice. In that respect, the specialization offers a unique opportunity to return to unhindered but structured and supported design exploration offered by the space of academia with an intention to cultivate relations between practice, historical knowledge and theoretical debates.

Studios in this system are offered by a range of academic and practicing architects, and will thus have a balance of practice oriented and theoretical explorations. FoAP’s tradition of intensive creative pedagogy underpins the studios in this specialization as it does in other streams.
